We are pleased to invite you to participate in the Second International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'16).

Privacy engineering research has never been a more timely endeavor. Ongoing news reports regarding global surveillance programs, massive personal data breaches in corporate databases, and notorious examples of personal tragedies due to privacy violations have intensified societal demands for privacy-friendly systems. In response, current legislative and standardization processes worldwide are seeking to strengthen individuals’ privacy by introducing legal and organizational frameworks that personal data collectors and processors must follow. As a result, engineers are increasingly expected to build and maintain systems that preserve privacy and comply with data protection standards in different ICT domains (such as health, energy, transportation, social computing, law enforcement, and public services) and on different infrastructures and architectures (such as cloud, grid, or mobile computing).

Although there is a consensus on the benefits of an engineering approach to privacy, few concrete proposals exist for models, methodologies, techniques and tools to support engineers and organizations in this endeavor. Work that focuses on helping organizations and software developers to identify and adopt appropriate privacy engineering methods, techniques and tools in their daily practices is also missing. Furthermore, it is difficult to systematically evaluate whether the systems developed using privacy engineering methodologies comply with legal frameworks, provide necessary technical assurances, and fulfill users’ privacy requirements.

Clearly, more research is needed in developing methods that can help translate legal and normative concepts, as well as user expectations, into systems requirements. There is also a growing need for techniques and tools to support organizations and engineers in developing and maintaining (socio-)technical systems that meet these requirements. In an effort to close the gaps in research, the topics of IWPE'16 include all aspects of privacy engineering, ranging from its theoretical foundations, engineering approaches and support infrastructures to its practical application in projects of different scales.

Specifically, we are seeking the following kinds of papers:
  1.  technical solution papers that illustrate a novel formalism, method or other research finding with preliminary evaluation;
  2.  experience and practice papers that describe a case study, challenge or lessons learned in a specific domain;
  3.  early evaluations of tools and techniques that support engineering tasks in privacy requirements, design, implementation, testing, etc.;
  4.  interdisciplinary studies or critical reviews of existing privacy engineering concepts, methods and frameworks; 
  5.  vision papers that take a clear position informed by evidence based on a thorough literature review.

IWPE’16 welcomes papers that focus on novel solutions based on recent developments in privacy engineering. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
  • Integrating law and policy compliance into the development process
  • Privacy impact assessment during software development
  • Privacy risk management models
  • Privacy breach recovery methods
  • Technical standards, heuristics and best practices for privacy engineering
  • Privacy engineering in technical standards
  • Privacy requirements elicitation and analysis methods

This topic list is not meant to be exhaustive, as IWPE'16 is interested in all aspects of privacy engineering. However, to screen out off-topic papers early in the review process, we request authors to submit an abstract prior to their paper submission. Abstracts of papers without a clear application to privacy engineering will be considered outside the scope of this workshop and may be rejected.

PAPER FORMAT & SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We solicit unpublished short position papers (up to 4 pages) and long papers reporting technical, research or industry experience (up to 8 pages) on all dimensions of the privacy engineering domain. Each paper, written in English, must follow IEEE Proceedings format. Submission of a paper should be regarded as a commitment that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors will attend the workshop to present the paper.

International Workshop on 5G Security - Programme

The 1st IEEE International Workshop on 5G Security held in conjunction with IEEE TrustCom-15

There is a fast on-going change in the technical architectures and topologies of the Internet: in the near future 5G and next generation 4G/LTE network architectures will be based on or migrated to Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). These create new virtual network elements each affecting the logic of the network operation, traffic management and introducing new and novel security challenges. Aspects such as security of orchestration, management functionality as well as surveillance and privacy are brought to the fore. At the same time they introduce new ways of dealing with attack prevention, management and recovery.

The one-day workshop will consist of papers, presentations and demonstrations on the subject of advanced network security. While primarily related to 5G networks, experiences from 4G/LTE, 3G and earlier, including case studies on practicalities of known attacks and novel attack vectors will be considered for acceptance. An invited keynote speech will be given setting out the overall area of security in network development and operations.

Privacy from legal aspects through to engineering concepts has become a defining aspect of system design. Knowledge of how this relatively young and important area links together lawyers and engineers is critical to a proper implementation of privacy beyond mere lip-service and obscure privacy policies.

What would make this tutorial session unique is the presentation of the end-to-end privacy ‘process’ with examples drawn from industry demonstrating how Privacy-by-Design becomes Privacy Engineering with foundational aspects, tools and techniques, risk management, requirements management, checklists, auditing etc being properly integrated together.

CFP: TrustCom 2015

With the rapid development and increasing complexity of computer systems and communication networks, user requirements for trust, security and privacy are becoming more and more demanding. Therefore, there is a grand challenge that traditional security technologies and measures may not meet user requirements in open, dynamic, heterogeneous, mobile, wireless, and distributed computing environments. As a result, we need to build systems and networks in which various applications allow users to enjoy more comprehensive services while preserving trust, security and privacy at the same time. As useful and innovative technologies, trusted computing and communications are attracting researchers with more and more attention.

The 14th IEEE International Conference on Trust, Security and Privacy in Computing and Communications (IEEE TrustCom-15) will be held in Helsinki, Finland on 20-22 August 2015. The conference aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners in the world working on trusted computing and communications, with regard to trust, security, privacy, reliability, dependability, survivability, availability, and fault tolerance aspects of computer systems and networks, and providing a forum to present and discuss emerging ideas and trends in this highly challenging research field.

Accepted and presented papers will be included in the IEEE CPS Proceedings.
Distinguished papers presented at the conference, after further revision, will be recommended to high quality international journals.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the premier annual event of the International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'15).

Ongoing news reports regarding global surveillance programs, massive personal data breaches in corporate databases, and notorious examples of personal tragedies due to privacy violations have intensified societal demands for privacy-friendly systems. In response, current legislative and standardization processes worldwide aim to strengthen individual’s privacy by introducing legal and organizational frameworks that personal data collectors and processors must follow.

However, in practice, these initiatives alone are not enough to guarantee that organizations and software developers will be able to identify and adopt appropriate privacy engineering techniques in their daily practices. Even if so, it is difficult to systematically evaluate whether the systems they develop using such techniques comply with legal frameworks, provide necessary technical assurances, and fulfill users’ privacy requirements. It is evident that research is needed in developing techniques that can aid the translation of legal and normative concepts, as well as user expectations into systems requirements. Furthermore, methods that can support organizations and engineers in developing (socio-)technical systems that address these requirements is of increasing value to respond to the existing societal challenges associated with privacy.

In this context, privacy engineering research is emerging as an important topic. Engineers are increasingly expected to build and maintain privacy-preserving and data-protection compliant systems in different ICT domains such as health, energy, transportation, social computing, law enforcement, public services; based on different infrastructures such as cloud, grid, or mobile computing and architectures. While there is a consensus on the benefits of an engineering approach to privacy, concrete proposals for processes, models, methodologies, techniques and tools that support engineers and organizations in this endeavor are few and in need of immediate attention.

To cover this gap, the topics of the International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'15) focus on all the aspects surrounding privacy engineering, ranging from its theoretical foundations, engineering approaches, and support infrastructures, to its practical application in projects of different scale. Wikileaks, NSA and a crytpographic cat and mouse game

So we know that certain government agencies are collecting data and we also know that Wikileaks has at least 400Gb of encrypted data (aka. "insurance") now in the public domain.

It is encrypted and no-one knows what's there...right?

Schneier posted on his blog an article about the upcomming cryptopocalypse about an presentation from the Black Hat conference entitled The Factoring Dead:Preparing for the Cryptopocalypse.

Given that we are fairly confident that the NSA has an enormous amount of computing power available to it, but even then probably not enough for a brute force attack on the Wikileak's encrypted data by a few orders of magnitude, they do have some pretty competent mathematicians working in that field and a vast amount of data including a lot of unencrypted originals.

Now, as mathematics starts chipping away as the encryption algorithms themselves the amount of computation and time to decrypt without a key comes dramatically down (it might just take a few billions of years now).

What helps in these scenarios is if you have some knowledge about what the encrypted data contains and its encryption method. If the Wikileaks file contains what it is supposed to contain (whatever that is, but it probably implicates the USA) then we have a head-start towards the decryption. This isn't too far from what Alan Turing and the Bletchley code breakers did.

Furthermore, rarely in the past have we have huge amounts of data to work with...encryption algorithms generate data with extremely high entropy. The point now is that is there enough entropy in 400Gb of encrypted data? Do patterns start emerging at some point? Admittedly even 400Gb is not considered a large amount of data these days.

Furthermore the encryption algorithm used is one approved by the NSA. What if the NSA start matching already encrypted documents they hold against the Wikileaks data? Is there a weakness in the keys? Are there patterns in the encrypted data that are independent of the keys being used? Then there's the interesting idea of a blackdoor in the algorithm too.

So, (tin foil hats on please), one of the things that Wikileaks is then looking forward is accidental disclosure of some information in that release. This might suggest that either NSA has succesfulyl decrypted the data. I'm sure that the NSA aren't that stupid to tell us that but governments are large things and even despite apparently good security practices breaches happen either deliberately or accidentally.

From a game theoretic point of view the best I can come up with at the moment is that any release of information by the NSA will reveal subtle hints about what they can and can not do with regards to their knowledge of encryption algorithms.

Shares in popcorn and publishers of books on game theory just went through the roof. Ultimately it might just be that physics, mathematics and plain old information theory has the last laugh...

3rd International Workshop on Layout of Diagrams 

Diagrams are an effective means of conveying a wide variety of different sources of information. They play a vital role in communication at many levels, and the quality of diagram layout effects the ease of communication. Creating task-adequate layouts is surprisingly difficult, and the cognitive factors involved are often not very well understood. The automatic generation of diagrams is essential for many tasks such as the presentation of multiple views of large scale data sets. In many domains, tool support is not satisfactory. The workshop aims to bring together different communities that can learn from each other, both within different academic disciplines and between academia and industry.
We solicit original submissions related to diagram layout, in areas including, but not limited to, the following areas:
  • Layout algorithms ;
  • Layout design styles, guidelines and patterns;
  • Automatic diagram generation and transformation techniques;
  • Visual language theory (e.g. quality metric development) ;
  • Visualisation of constraints, algorithms, and tools;
  • Cognitive or empirical research on diagram layout;
  • Diagram layout for diagrammatic reasoning, knowledge representation, etc;
  • Application areas (e.g. system modelling, ontology visualisation, etc, with an emphasis on layout requirements and benefits).
All diagram types fall within the scope of the workshop series (e.g. graphs, hypergraphs, Euler diagrams, maps, knot diagrams, etc). Of particular interest is research and techniques that may encourage interaction and knowledge transfer between fields. However, for this instalment of the workshop series, we particularly encourage submissions that have a software engineering orientation (e.g. those within UML, IDEF or ARIS), building on the success of two previous workshops at VL/HCC on the Layout of Software Engineering Diagrams (LED).

The proceedings of this workshop will be published in the journal of Electronic Communications of the EASST (TBC). All papers must conform to the ECEASST format. All papers must be submitted electronically in the PDF format via the EasyChair submission system. Each submission will be reviewed by 3 reviewers, as usual.

The intention is that after the workshop the authors of the best papers will be invited to submit a revised and significantly extended version of their article to a special issue of a sutiable journal (e.g. Journal of Visual Languages and Computing or the journal of Software and Systems Modeling).

IEEE ICSC 2012: The Sixth IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing

Program Goals and Format: 
The goals of the ICSC 2012 Industry Session are to foster exchanges between practitioners and the academics, to promote novel solutions to today's challenges in the area of Semantic Computing and applications, to provide practitioners in the field an early opportunity to evaluate leading-edge research, and to identify new issues and directions for future research and development efforts. Similar to regular papers, the papers in the industry session will undergo a review process and will appear in the conference proceedings. However, the selection criteria for industry papers are slightly different. In particular, papers should describe technologies, methodologies, applications, prototypes or experiences of clear industry relevance. A main goal of this session is to present research work that exposes the academic and research communities to challenges and issues important for the industry. Therefore, the papers in this session will be evaluated primarily by the novelty and applicability of the insights from its industrial solutions, instead of the originality of its algorithmic content. 

Topics of Interest: 
Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to those identified in the main conference call for papers, as well as those listed below:

1. Development of new semantic systems, architecture, and standards 
2. Employment of semantic computing tools and interfaces 
3. Employment of large scale semantic systems

Industrial Paper Submission: 
Industrial papers should be submitted via the ICSC 2012 online paper submission system. Industry Session papers should be no longer than 8 pages with the same submission guidelines available on the ICSC 2012 web page. Only electronic submission will be accepted. All industrial papers will be peer-reviewed and published in the conference proceedings, which will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. Submissions must not be published or submitted for another conference.

Diagrams 2012:
Diagrams is the only conference series that provides a united forum for all areas that are concerned with the study of diagrams, including architecture, art, artificial intelligence, cartography, cognitive science, computer science, education, graphic design, history of science, human-computer interaction, linguistics, logic, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and software modelling. The conference attracts a large number of researchers from virtually all these related fields, positioning Diagrams as a major international event in the area.
VL/HCC 2012:
From the beginning of the computer age, people have sought easier ways to learn, express, and understand computational ideas. Whether this meant moving from punch cards to textual languages, or command lines to graphical UIs, the quest to make computation easier to express, manipulate, and understand by a broader group of people is an ongoing challenge.
VLC 2012:
Visual languages mediate human and computer interaction. For some visual languages this mediation is straightforward; using a mouse to access a drop-down menu is well-known to computer users. For others, this mediation can be enriched via sketch and gesture recognition. This is made possible by advances in commodity hardware. More formal visual languages allow experts to accurately specify complex systems, such as software architecture or chemical molecules. A visual language can also encompass complex human-computer interaction such as navigating a set of semantically linked videos. Indeed, precision of semantics underlies visual languages and computation. 
UbiCOMM 2012:
The rapid advances in ubiquitous technologies make fruition of more than 35 years of research in distributed computing systems, and more than two decades of mobile computing. The ubiquity vision is becoming a reality. Hardware and software components evolved to deliver functionality under failure-prone environments with limited resources. The advent of web services and the progress on wearable devices, ambient components, user-generated content, mobile communications, and new business models generated new applications and services. The conference makes a bridge between issues with software and hardware challenges through mobile communications.
